Created attachment 481182 [details] Repro On iOS / iPadOS, but not macOS, when an element has a click handler, invoking event.preventDefault() in that element's pointer down event handler does not prevent a focus change, it only prevents a focus change to that element; The active element will still lose focus. preventDefault() _does_ work as expected when invoked on a mouse down event. This bug may be a duplicate of https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316402 However, that report points to an interaction with tab-index, but here tab-index is irrelevant.
